>> from abc news world headquarters in new york. this is world news tonight. >> good evening. thanks for joining us on this busy sunday. i'm mary bruce in for linsey davis. president trump is signaling another tariff reversal. and there's breaking news out of austin texas. six people injured in a house explosion. but we begin tonight with an arrest in the alleged arson attack at the home of pennsylvania governor josh shapiro. that individual now facing attempted murder and arson charges. abc news learning that authorities are trying to determine if the governor's jewish faith was a possible motivation for the attack. coming on the first night of passover, the governor and his family were inside the home at the time of the fire, but were able to escape the flames. shapiro, a rising star in the democratic party under consideration for vice president in 2024, now viewed as a possible contender for the white house in 2028. just moments ago, calling this a targeted attack. new details are coming in tonight. abc's chief investigative correspondent

aaron katersky leads us off from harrisburg, pennsylvania. >> tonight, an arrest after what police called an act of arson at pennsylvania governor josh shapiro's residence, where he and his family had gathered to celebrate the first night of passover. >> the governor's residence reporting a large fire in the dining room on the first floor. they can see fire out the windows. >> the governor says he woke up to police banging on the door. around 2 a.m, he and his family quickly evacuating as firefighters raced to get the fire under control. >> they're currently working on getting everybody evacuated. about 25 people inside. >> we do know that this attack was targeted. this type of violence is not okay. >> just hours before the fire. shapiro sharing this photo of his family's seder table on social media. a senior law enforcement official tells abc news authorities are investigating whether the arson could have been motivated by the governor's jewish faith. >> no one will deter me or my family or any pennsylvanian from

and other electronics from the latest round of tariffs, the president now saying those products will be targeted again soon. trump tonight posting tariffs on these products are just moving to a different tariff bucket. the president adding nobody is getting off the hook for the unfair trade balances, especially not china which by far treats us the worst. the president promising to outline a plan tomorrow for tariffs on semiconductors, the computer chips that power smartphones and other technologies. >> i'll give you that answer on monday. we'll be very specific. on monday. >> his commerce secretary saying new tariffs could be imposed within weeks. >> so what he's doing is he's saying they're exempt from the reciprocal tariffs, but they're included in the semiconductor tariffs, which are coming in probably a month or two. >> but for now, the current carve outs remain. it's relief for tech companies and consumers amid fears that trump's 145% tariffs on all chinese goods

will send prices of electronics skyrocketing. beijing calling the exemptions a small step in correcting a wrong practice, urging the u.s. to completely cancel the so-called reciprocal tariffs. but the administration, adamant these tariffs will help boost manufacturing in the united states. >> we need to have semiconductors, we need to have chips and we need to have flat panels. we need to have these things made in america. >> according to trump's trade representative, there are currently no plans for trump to speak with chinese president xi jinping, but negotiations are underway with other leaders. after trump announced a 90 day pause on his sweeping tariffs on most countries last week. >> 130 countries have responded and we're negotiating with them. it's kind of almost a two world system. there's a process about china and that's very, very nascent, if at all. and then the process for everybody else. >> the flurry of tariffs and reversals already weighing on businesses and consumers.

the 17 year old is charged with murder in the deaths of his stepmother, his mother and stepfather. so let's bring in abc's melissa, donald and melissa. you're learning the fbi now believes there may be others who are aware of this alleged plot. >> mary. yes. these new federal documents are showing that the government is considering possible conspiracy charges. this against 17 year old nikita kasap and also the others who they say had some knowledge about the alleged extremist plot. the fbi says the wisconsin teen allegedly murdered his parents and was motivated by white supremacy with extremist neo-nazi views in order to obtain the financial means and autonomy necessary to kill president trump and overthrow the government. well, federal affidavits say that kasap was in contact with others who appear to have been aware of his plan and actions and also provided assistance. this including a couple of people overseas, as well as another person who allegedly told that he was going to go on a spree of violence.

>> mary. a bizarre and troubling story. melissa. thank you. tonight, the ntsb is investigating yet another small plane crash, this one in upstate new york. six people were aboard the plane that crashed into a field. authorities say that muddy conditions have made accessing the scene difficult. this just days after that deadly helicopter crash in the hudson river. abc's ike ejiochi has the latest on both crashes. >> this muddy field in upstate new york is now the site of another ntsb investigation. tonight, after a private plane with six people on board crashed just miles from its destination. data from flightradar 24 show the mitsubishi mu two b private plane departing from white plains, new york, at 1133 saturday morning. it was headed to columbia county airport in hudson, new york. when officials say it crashed less than an hour later near copake. that crash comes as dive teams here in new york city are back in the hudson river tonight, searching for crucial pieces of that sightseeing helicopter that

broke apart midair, killing six people on board. two executives at global tech company siemens, along with their three children and their pilot, a navy veteran with more than 780 hours of flight time. new video shows investigators reassembling pieces of the main cabin from the helicopter so far recovering the main fuselage, cabin and part of the helicopter's tail. and now, investigators say the helicopter was not equipped with any flight recorders. that's why finding the main rotor seen here spinning off as the chopper plunges into the water and its gearbox is crucial. >> everything about this particular rotor is going to need to be looked at in very great detail to figure out not only what happened, but how it happened. >> the ntsb revealing the bell 206 l-4, operated by new york helicopter charter, had its last major inspection on march 1st. and on the day of the tragic crash, the helicopter completed seven tour flights, the accident occurring minutes into the eighth flight of the day. ntsb

investigators met with representatives from the chopper's operator, new york helicopters. investigators also examined two exemplar helicopters. mary. >> okay. thank you. next tonight, new details on the status of a maryland man wrongly deported to a notorious prison in el salvador. the department of justice saying that kilmer garcia is alive and secure, but no word on if and when they plan to comply with the judge's order to return him back to the u.s. and tonight, the new demand from his attorneys. here's abc's christiane cordero. >> tonight, new questions about the plans to return this man, kilmer, rodrigo garcia, who was wrongfully deported last month to a notorious salvadoran prison. a federal judge in maryland ordering daily status updates from the department of justice after its attorneys couldn't provide details on his whereabouts. despite the supreme court ordering abrego garcia be brought back to the u.s, the doj now says abrego garcia is alive and secure in the prison, but

it's still unclear what steps they have made to facilitate his return. the federal government alleging abrego garcia is a gang member, though he has not been charged with any crime. his family denies the allegations. abrego garcia had a court order barring his deportation to el salvador after escaping political violence there in 2011. lawyers representing the husband and father are asking the administration be held in contempt that the government fly him back immediately and requesting he be granted parole. his attorney speaking with abc's pierre thomas friday. >> i'm not going to tell them which flight to put him on. i'm not. the judge isn't going to tell them which flight to put him on. of course the government gets to make those decisions, but they have to actually do it. >> before the supreme court weighed in, president trump said he would comply with their decision. >> i have great respect for the supreme court. if they said to bring him back, i would tell them to bring him back. >> trump later appeared to backtrack, suggesting the u.s. doesn't have the authority to bring abrego garcia back, referencing the 200 plus

migrants sent to the prison. trump wrote, they, quote, are now in the sole custody of el salvador and their future is up to president bukele and his government. mary, it's unclear what conversations president trump and president bukele have had about this case, if any. bukele is set to visit trump at the white house tomorrow. mary. >> all eyes will be on that meeting, for sure. christiane. thank you. now, to a russian missile strike killing dozens in ukraine. it's the second massive attack to claim civilian lives in over a week. more than 100 people were injured. it came as many families were heading to church to celebrate palm sunday. several world leaders are condemning the attack, and we want to warn you the images are disturbing. here's abc's marcus moore. >> reporter. this is the moment ukraine says two ballistic missiles from russia struck the bustling city of sumy. as many people were out marking palm sunday. in video shared on social media, a car dash cam captured the devastating strike in northeastern ukraine. emergency services says more

than 30 people, including two children, were killed and another 117 people were injured. death and destruction. in the streets of what is typically a celebration amidst the chaos and carnage. this woman is seen consoling a young child. ukraine's president zelenskyy calling for international pressure on russia to end the war. a war that in recent weeks has seen an increase in civilian deaths. the latest salvo comes days after u.s. special envoy steve witkoff met with russian president vladimir putin in russia. it's part of an attempt to secure a ceasefire in ukraine. while the talks were said to have been productive. a deal to pause the fighting and end this horror for civilians, clearly remains distant. president trump and russian president vladimir putin have expressed an openness to meeting, but no date has been set on when they might meet in person. president trump is calling for a swift end to the war. mary. >> okay, marcus. thank you. next tonight, two college students detained in denmark after a dispute with a rideshare driver. the state department is now

working with their families. so let's bring in abc's phil lipof. so, phil, what are you learning tonight? >> mary, a family attorney tells us owen ray was on spring break with a friend in denmark, in copenhagen, denmark. and the attorney tells us the two were heading back to their hotel the night of march 30th. had a dispute with their rideshare driver. the pair then exited the vehicle. the driver subsequently got out as well and kicked owen. that's according to the attorney. owen then pushed back and the driver fell. the attorney says that owen and his friend ran away and then went to the airport for their separate flights home the next day. he says that's when authorities prevented them from boarding their flights, deeming them to be a flight risk. the attorney says the pair has been in custody since that time, though those details are a bit unclear. danish police say they haven't been charged but are expecting to make some sort of statement tomorrow. mary. >> okay, we shall see. phil. thank you. and there is still
